What are liposomes?

What are Liposomes?

When you ingest traditional supplements orally, their content undergo decomposition at many levels in the digestive system, thus resulting in low bioavailability and a low absorption rate. With liposomal technology, nutrient payloads bypass these degradation steps, and the active ingredient or enclosed nutrient is directly released into the bloodstream and from there into the cells and tissues, where it needs to be.

Liposomes are formed with a thin, wall-like layer, similar to a bubble or balloon, and contain a lot of space on the inside to hold various nutrients. The images above may not look particularly impressive in black and white, but upon closer inspection you can really appreciate what we are talking about. It takes a bit of time to get used to these images, yet we find them to be amazing.

Visualize liposomes like tiny grocery bags. If they are too small, they can't carry much, and if they are too large, they won't be absorbed as well. The optimum size is between 100 and 400 nanometers, as they can hold a lot of nutrition and be absorbed efficiently.

Our preferred size for liposomes is approximately 100 nm to 400 nm, and most of the liposomes in our products are within this range: some are smaller, and some are larger, but 95% fall into this size. This size is ideal for direct absorption and can hold a large volume of nutrition inside each liposome.
The size of these particles is too small to be viewed through an optical microscope, necessitating the need for specialized equipment for verification. Our two-step process begins with characterizing the particle size using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) equipment, which gives us an idea of the size range and percentage of each size. Nevertheless, we cannot ascertain whether these particles are solid particles or true liposomes without further information. This is accomplished by obtaining electron microscope images, which also helps to validate the size once again.

Using EMI (Electron Microscopy Imaging), we can observe liposomes and confirm their shape. We can observe that they are translucent spheres, as would be expected for a liposome, rather than solid particles. This is because if they were solid, they would not be spherical and they would not be translucent.
It is evident that the liposomes are not all perfect spherical shapes, as they are pressed against each other. The number of liposomes can be ascertained by the images, however, the above images have been greatly magnified to make the liposomes visible. This means the density of liposomes in our products is high.
PhosphatidylCholine (PC) and other phospholipids constitute the thin wall. As beneficial nutrients in their own right, these phospholipids are carrying a nutrient payload within them, with the PC balloon as its golden wrapping.

Two of the images are at 500 nm (0.5 um) to illustrate the comparative sizes and the tight packing of the liposomes. The third image is magnified to 200 nm (0.2um) to show a detailed view of the liposome wall—you can identify the thickness of the PC that forms the barrier of the liposomes.

The photos demonstrate that smaller liposomes are present inside larger liposomes. This is an amazing feature as it allows for a gradual release of nourishment. The bigger liposomes release their nutrients first, while the smaller ones follow suit, thus maintaining a high level of nutrients for a longer period. This gives the cells of the body the ability to make better use of the nutrition. This can be likened to the difference between a flash flood and a light rain. A flash flood passes quickly and the plants (like cells) do not reap its benefits. However, a light rain provides plants with the sustenance they need to grow.

Liposomes surpass simple emulsions in terms of effectiveness due to their ability to form a protective barrier, shielding delicate molecules from the corrosive environment of the stomach. In addition, they can transport larger volumes of nutrition, with their natural time-release feature being something an emulsion cannot provide. Lastly, the PC of the liposome is a beneficial constituent.
For a number of years, we have been studying the production of liposomes using natural components in natural settings. We have been continually refining our methods in this regard, in addition to working with our producers who have been developing their own machines over time; they have been tweaking different parameters to manufacture the most resilient and beneficial liposomes possible.

Our liposomal products are produced in The Netherlands and the UK. They come in either HDPE bottles, secured screw-top lids, and measuring cups or glass bottles with an eye-dropper for accurate dosing – depending on the product. Additionally, these products are non-GMO, non-Soy, gluten free and most are vegan friendly. All components for every item can be seen on the individual product pages.
